When you are considering using historic textiles that have had a prior life, with perhaps a stain, a hole or a minor tear, don't worry, use them with abandon. I always find in my own use and in observing those pieces used in the work of other designers, that pairing them with crisp new linens, or stretching them over handsome valances or draped over a sofa creates a great look. Don't be afraid to use old textiles, think of old linen flour sacks, velvets and embroidery from the flea markets in France, toiles, African Kuba cloth, anything with a provenance or not, even old trimmings, we are seeing them used beautifully in traditional, contemporary or eclectic interiors. They are livable and sometimes even wearable pieces of art, in a word! I recommend you take a look at Elle Decor, Veranda, House Beautiful, World of Interiors, Architectural Digest, Milieu (to name a few wonderful design publications) for inspiration.
